The History of CBD

Whilst lots of noise has been made about cannabidiol (CBD) in recent years, it has actually been used in a variety of ways for decades. CBD is a naturally occurring extract that is derived from the cannabis plant, and despite the negative associations of cannabis, CBD is regarded to provide an array of potential health benefits.

More people are becoming interested in CBD and its potential health benefits, with over 6 million people in the UK claiming to have used CBD in the past year. Whilst CBD has been at the centre of many recent scientific studies, its plant of origin has been around for thousands of years.

How has CBD been used historically?

CBD itself was only discovered as an extract in the 1940s, the cannabis plant that it is derived from has been used for thousands of years, with studies and records suggesting its cultivation first happened between 10,000 and 12,000 years ago!

CBD is extracted from the hemp strain of the cannabis plant family, and whilst there is a difference between CBD extract and hemp plants, there has been an interest in the plant and its effects when ingested for a significant time.

As mentioned, CBD was originally discovered in 1940 by Roger Adams – and following advancements in technology and scientific study, it was eventually found that CBD could be separated from the psychoactive chemical THC. The method of separating THC from CBD has allowed scientists to study the natural effects of CBD, without any of the psychoactive side effects.

Modern day usage of CBD

Although more research needs to be done on CBD and no medical claims can be named, people have become more interested in the potential health benefits of the extract. With the growth in popularity, there has been an increased demand for CBD-infused products such as oil drops and skin creams.

Whilst there isn’t yet enough conclusive data, CBD has been associated with helping to raise mood levels, tackle sleeping problems, alleviate pain, and soothe sore muscles. Of course, it’s worth talking to your GP if you suffer severely from any of these problems, but some people have reported that CBD-infused products have helped with problems such as the ones listed.
