An Interview With World Fitness Championships Winner Arran Arogundade. Here's what he had to say...
What drew you to the world of bodybuilding?
It began when I started hitting the gym hard. After a few years I managed to build a good physique and wanted to see how I could improve on this with a strict workout and diet regime. Bodybuilding competitions gave me that focus. I also wanted to be able to show my kids, when I have them, what their father looked like and hopefully make them proud.
Diet is such an important part of bodybuilding, what does yours consist of and why?
My diet generally consists of high protein, which I get from lean meats, and high fat. Why fats? Because a high fat diet provides me with the energy I need to do my daily work and smash my workouts. They also help me to maintain a lean physique, which I find difficult to achieve with a high carb diet. I still eat carbs post or pre-workout if I feel I need this extra boost.
What is your favourite type of workout routine?
I train 5-6 times a week and this usually consists of 20 minutes cardio a day and a heavy weight sessions I like to mix it up and go to my 1 Rep Max, however I also like to keep between the rep range of 8-12.
How do you achieve a healthy work/life balance?
I love going out for dinner. You can still eat out and stay healthy, it's all about the choices you make. I often go for the salad on the menu or choose a steak with a side order of seasonal veg. I also love spending time with family and friends. I make sure I always train even if this means getting up an hour earlier – it’s about priorities. I work a 9-5, but ensure that I plan my day so it's most effective.
Did you have an alternative career plan if bodybuilding didn’t work out?
I have always worked in the fitness industry, from managing two gyms in East London to now working for a fitness equipment manufacturer. Besides my bodybuilding and fitness goals I plan to invest in property.
What advice would you offer to anyone trying to get into bodybuilding or improve their fitness levels?
Nutrition is so important! It will help you grow, it will help you perform faster and stronger in anything related to fitness. It will also make you feel awesome and healthy. Make a plan, stick to it! Focus and stay determined. Nothing happened over night but everyday counts.
